5 tips to help children cope with an exam

With the arrival of exams, many children have difficulty coping with them successfully. Of course, studying daily and using study techniques will go a long way toward preparing you properly.

However, even having invested a lot of effort and having studied it properly, as the days leading up to exams approach, we all get nervous and it causes you to alter your routine. Can we help you? Take note.

Although anxiety is experienced as something negative, in itself it arises to keep you alert and ready to react to what is asked of you quickly. Nevertheless, for many children that moment is experienced as a situation that will block them and where negative thoughts will surface, fears such as disappointment for not knowing certain questions or a feeling of failure.

To avoid this, there are many who make 'small sacrifices' to improve their grades without knowing that they will achieve just the opposite of what they proposed. Therefore, we recommend a series of tips that you or your child may not know and that will help you enormously when you are in front of an exam:

1. Encourage him to play sports: When exams are coming up we think that sport can mean that you stress more and take time to study. However, sport manages to release the tension that having an exam can entail and helps to consolidate the knowledge that has been studied. Also, more hours is not a synonym for success. Nobody is capable of spending many hours in front of a book and taking advantage of the time. So if it is not going to get you to learn the subject better, at least the sport will get you to disconnect briefly from the study and allow you to resume it in another way when you get home.

2. Explain the importance of sleeping 8 hours: The study must be done before and one night will not change the final result. Our body needs to rest and the REM phase of sleep will allow us to consolidate what has been studied during the day. So although it may seem to us that nothing is done during that time, it is actually a key moment to memorize the knowledge you have studied. Therefore, if your child cannot sleep the hours he needs, it will not do much to get up early or go to bed late.

3. Encourage him to express his emotions before a test: The minutes before or the day before an exam can be very stressful, which will detract from your mental alertness. The best thing to combat this blockage is to talk about it or write down those feelings on a sheet of paper, in this way negative thoughts and anxiety are reduced.

4. Give him the confidence he lacks: Insecurity is one of the causes that will make you freeze and stop answering the questions you know. It is important that you believe in yourself and your possibilities so that you do not get bogged down in any question. At that point, your nerves may play tricks on you, so help your child by writing notes with positive messages so that they can read them before entering the exam.

5. Take your time: In times of stress, impulsivity can play a trick on the exam. Reading each question comprehensively, selecting the one that is best known and thinking about what to write before will be very useful. Children often confuse questions by not reading carefully what the question asks. Not looking is a very common cause of suspense for many children. Therefore, try to make them aware that it is not a speed race but a long distance race.
