When couples have been trying to have a child for years and seek medical help to get it, going from 0 to 2 children is the dream of most. However, due to the illusion of being parents, many do not stop to reflect on the risks involved in a multiple pregnancy, since it is considered a high-risk pregnancy.
At least this is what a study by theInstitut Marquès, which has interviewed 980 childless couples from 31 countries who have undergone assisted reproduction treatments. Although there are great differences between countries, in Spain, Italy and some Nordic states such as Norway, more than 60 percent of couples state that they would like twins and only between 20 and 30 percent would like the pregnancy to be unique. On the contrary, in countries like Germany or France, this percentage is reduced to half and only 30 and 40 percent of couples, respectively, would like to have two babies at the same time.
And it is that when a woman fears that she will not become a mother, she is capable of taking all kinds of risks to achieve her dream of having a child, despite the fact that with a multiple pregnancy of two or more babies the risk of hypertension increases and diabetes in pregnancy, premature delivery, low birth weight babies, cesarean section and perinatal mortality.
However, in favor of science and advances in assisted reproduction techniques, it must be said that, in recent years, the rate of multiple births in assisted reproduction treatments has been considerably reduced. This is due to the latest advances in Reproductive Biology that currently allow the cultivation of embryos up to their fifth day of development, avoiding the risk of multiple pregnancy. Genetic analysis of oocytes or embryos has also contributed to transferring fewer and better quality embryos. Choosing the embryos with the greatest potential to implant and lead to a pregnancy allows the transfer of fewer embryos, even just one, without reducing success rates.
Currently, the birth of triplets is an exceptional event. The natural incidence of twin deliveries is 0.8 percent of deliveries, and today, in advanced countries 1.6 percent of births are twins. Apparently, the belief that nowadays more twins or twins are born by Assisted Reproduction techniques reflects that, in reality, the number of people with fertility problems who go to clinics to become parents is growing.
