Small child

Symptoms of autism

The child is a treasure for their parents, which they carefully observe. Every progress fills with pride and at the same time reassures that "everything is fine." Sometimes, however, something about the development of our child is worrying, maybe it differs from the way siblings behave when they were of a similar age, or maybe it seems that some of the child's skills began to fade.

Do not underestimate this situation, it is better to dispel any doubts and start early intervention than to try to catch up with growing development deficits later. The child can and must be effectively helped, diagnosis of comprehensive developmental disorders (childhood autism, Asperger's Syndrome) it's not a sentence but a challenge and a chance to take effective action.

Symptoms appear most often at the age of 1.5 to 3 years, most cases are among boys, but they can also appear in girls. They also occur more often Rett syndrome. Behaviors and deficits that should alert parents are:

  • Poor speech development- at the age of 2 the child should already name the persons, objects and activities with which he has contact. Two-word statements are already appearing, although often without a change. The child uses diminutive. He understands simple sentences and commands and carries them out. He speaks about himself. Can point and name known objects, people, animals in pictures. His language skills and word resources are developing rapidly.
  • Difficulties in using the language they are not compensated by gestures for the child- pointing, papa, nodding etc.
  • No mutual attention - the child does not look at the item we are showing, there is no need to bring toys or other "treasures" to parents
  • Weakened eye contact- the child does not look in the eyes, sometimes his look is disturbing - too "indifferent", as if out of focus on the person or too "staring", as if not looking at the person, but for example his reflection in the iris.
  • The child plays with toys in a disturbing way, contrary to their function - sniffs them, knocks them, ranks them, moves them before their eyes. At this age, the child should already develop themed play by imitating adults and recreating their experiences, e.g. doll research and care, driving a car. He can also play constructively - build a bridge or tower from several blocks.
  • The child prefers lonely play and gets angry or does not pay attention when we want to join.
  • Does not respond to a smile, does not initiate games with the guardian.

Disorders from the autism spectrum are accompanied by sensory integration disorders, which means that the child's senses cannot cooperate with each other and properly process the information that reaches them. Disturbing parents may include:

  • limited food preferences - the child wants to eat the same amount of food constantly, for example only salty foods or only in the form of "mush",
  • aversion to clothes made of a specific material or in clothes in general,
  • the child does not like hugging or the opposite: he approaches everyone, suddenly, hugs him strongly, or loves to be very hugged,
  • aversion to specific sounds, noise, being in the crowd,
  • staring e.g. at a spinning washing machine, lights.

Sometimes it is difficult for parents to assess whether a child is developing properly or whether steps need to be taken. Meanwhile the delay works to the detriment of our child - wastes time while peers are growing fast. Therefore, in addition to searching for information yourself, it is worth contacting a specialist who will help verify parents' fears and propose therapy methods. Parent's least concern should be consulted with a specialist.
