Tests

We test bath emulsions

We want to give the little child the most and the best we can. We want clothes to be washed in the most suitable way so as not to sensitize the child unnecessarily. In the same way we want to take care of delicate skin, from the use of appropriate diapers, wipes and creams, to emollients for baths. I decided to look closely at the latter.
The cosmetics market for children is wide from the first day of life. Among them, bath emollients caught my attention.
How do they differ from the liquids and gels available in every convenience store?
First of all, the composition. Emollients, so emulsionsin their composition have high concentration of liquid paraffin. This has a direct impact on oiling effect on the baby's skin during and after bathing (you do not need to use olives after bathing, if you gently wipe the child from the water, a small, slippery, safe, oiling coating of liquid paraffin will remain on the child's skin).

Liquid paraffin creates an oily coating on the stratum corneum, preventing excessive evaporation of water from the surface of the skin and thus providing it with adequate moisture and lubrication. It is recommended to use baths in emulsions with an increased concentration of paraffin in children with dry skin, sensitive or atopic. However, if the concentration is less than the "therapeutic" dose, we can freely choose the emulsion for the daily bath of our baby.

Another difference to fluids is no foam present. This is especially important when bathing the youngest children. We avoid rinsing suds from the nooks and crannies of our baby, and thus the accumulation of cosmetics. Naturally, the product is safe if it gets into your eyes.

Emulsions in water they give a slightly turbid water color, slightly whitish. They do not foam, regardless of the order of addition (I always poured the emulsion first, then I added water, so the probability of foaming the emulsion was greatest), the fragrance is extremely delicate and very pleasant. Increasingly, they can also be bought in large convenience stores with a well-stocked children's department (until a year ago they were available almost exclusively at pharmacies).

The emulsion market is not small. Each of the producers offers not only a universal bath emulsion, but also hair shampoos, medicinal emulsions or gels with an increased concentration of liquid paraffin, creams, bar soaps, oils, lotions etc. Which manufacturer should you choose? Below is a comparison of three manufacturers' products, most often, and therefore the most easily available on our market.

Oilatum

Bath emulsion comes in several forms: Oilatum, Oilatum Soft, Oilatum Baby. In addition, Oilatum emulsion is also available in an imported version (less decorative box, English instructions).

The preparation can also be applied directly to the skin as an oiling.
Contraindications:Do not use in hypersensitivity to liquid paraffin or any of the drug's excipients, orally.
Side effects:During the use of Oilatum, skin symptoms (erythema, urticaria) and allergies may occur.

MY EVALUATION:

The emulsion is comfortable to apply with a screw cap, a small cap with a porous surface does not slip in your hand, the emulsion is extremely efficient (500ml is enough for 2-3 months of daily use). In the winter I used even 3 caps for the bathtub, in the period from spring to autumn - 2, so a lot.

Emulsion in operation, use, performance identical to that of an unimported product. The advantage is the price, up to PLN 10 lower with 500ml packaging.

Oilatum Soft

Composition:Composition (1 gram): light liquid patina 634 mg, acetylated lanolin alcohols, isopropyl palmitate, ethylene glycol dilaurate 400, Arlatone T, aroma
Capacities and prices:150ml / 23.76 PLN, 250ml / 35.54 PLN, 500ml / 54.20 PLN
Dosage:Baths for babies and children: add 1-2 caps of Oilatum emulsion to the tub filled with water. Gently massage the immersed body with your hand or a washcloth. After the bath, gently dry the skin with a towel.
The preparation can also be applied directly to the skin as an oiling.
Contraindications:Do not use in hypersensitivity to liquid paraffin or any of the drug's excipients, orally.
Side effects:When using Oilatum Soft, skin symptoms (erythema, urticaria) and allergy to the drug components may occur.

MY EVALUATION:
The difference with Oilatum is small. Noticeable is less permanent skin lubrication, nicer packaging, a more pleasant, more floral fragrance and, unfortunately, less performance. However, for a child without skin problems, it will be just as good as the previous emulsions.

Oilatum Baby

Composition:Paraffinum Liquidum, Isopropyl palmitate, PEG-8 Dilaurate, Cetyl Acetate, PEG-40 Sorbitan Peroleate, Stearyl Acetate, Oleyl Acetate, Acetylated lanolin Alcohol.

Contraindications:Do not use in hypersensitivity to liquid paraffin or any of the drug's excipients, orally.
Side effects:When using Oilatum Soft, skin symptoms (erythema, urticaria) and allergy to the drug components may occur.

MY EVALUATION:
The emulsion is definitely more delicate. Already at the first touch you can see that it is designed specifically for a child. I do not think, however, that it is better than the other Oilatum Brand emulsions. The addition in the name "Baby" has an effect on the price ...

Emolium

The Emolium brand is a line of specialized products for comprehensive care of dry, irritated and atopic skin. Emollients come in various forms: creams, ointments, lotions and bath oils, washing gels and toilet cubes. They are divided by the manufacturer according to the type of skin: dry, sensitive and irritated skin; very dry, irritated and itchy skin; hypersensitive, cracked skin.

According to studies conducted using Emolium cosmetics, we can classify products into the group of drugs. Each group contains bath emulsions that can be used in children and infants, as well as adults.

does not contain dyes and fragrances
is hypoallergenic
Emolium bath emulsion has a positive opinion of the Institute of Mother and Child
It is recommended for skin care of children and babies.
indicationsDaily nutrition and skin hygiene:very dry, rough and cracked irritated, itchy

My Rating:

Emolium is definitely a medicine and should be treated as such. The manufacturer encourages daily use of the cosmetic. However, I am of the opinion that giving the child medicine without the need, if the child does not have skin problems is unnecessary and can even be harmful. The emulsion itself is very pleasant, gently smells, leaves a delicate, slightly slippery coating on the skin that provides hydration (when drying the skin rather than wiping it stays on the skin for a long time).

Emolium P three-active bath emulsion. The drug is intended for hypersensitive, cracked skin

Composition:Mineral Oil, Isopropyl Palmitate, Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride, Laureth-9, PEG-40 Sorbitan Peroleate, C12-13 Pareth-3, Macadamia Ternifolia Oil, Spent Grain Wax, Persea Oil, Butyrospermum parksi (Shea Butter), Phenethyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Undecyl Alcohol, PEG-8, Tocopherol, Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Citric Acid.
Capacities and prices:200ml / 29,66zł
Dosage:Adult bath: Unless your doctor tells you otherwise: To a half-filled bathtub, add 30 ml of the preparation (1 scoop). The bath should last about 15 minutes. Then gently dry the skin with a towel, without wiping. Bath for children and babies: unless your doctor tells you otherwise: Add 15 ml of the preparation to the tub filled with water (1/2 scoop). Wash the child with water and then gently dry his skin with a towel without rubbing.
The preparation has washing properties. When bathing with the addition of Emolium P bath emulsion, no other cleaning agents should be used. Within about 5 minutes after bathing, the skin should be smeared with a suitable emollient. This will protect the skin moisturized during bathing from secondary drying and reoccurrence of the itch.
propertiesWorks in parallel:antipruritic for regenerating bacteria on the skin
Thanks to the anhydrous formula (84.4% of lipid substances) and the combination of patented active substances, it instantly alleviates itching, supplements the lipids of the stratum corneum and rebuilds the coat for a long time
hydrolipid skin.
indicationsAntipruritic skin care and nutrition:irritated and itchy, very dry, rough and cracked

My rating
Definitely designed to treat skin problems. The small packaging additionally discourages daily use of the drug. In the case of this emulsion, I would not use it without consulting a doctor. I strongly advise against using this emulsion as a preventive measure! The composition itself is so puzzling that we are unable to know for sure WHAT is contained in the emulsion. Below are brief explanations of the ingredients.

Short "dictionary" of substances used by the manufacturer:

  • Stimu-Tex®- wax prepared by extraction from barley pulp.
  • Alchem® - undecyl alcohol.
  • polidocanol - belongs to the group of polyalkylene glycol ethers.
  • Corn oil triglycerides - obtained from cold-pressed maize seed oil.
  • Macadamia oil - oil obtained from Macadamia ternifolia nuts, rich in phytoseroles and lecithin.
  • Shea butter - obtained from the seeds of the Magnifolia butter tree.
  • Avocado oil - obtained from cold pressed ripe avocado fruits.
  • Paraffin oil - liquid paraffin, a mixture of solid saturated hydrocarbons.

OILLAN

The Oillan series was created for the care of sensitive and allergic skin. These ailments often accompany such diseases as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and fish scales. Oillan products based on emollients, thanks to delicate, hypoallergenic ingredients are intended for both children and adults.

Oillan cosmetics have a very wide range. They are available not only in pharmacies, but also in large supermarkets or drugstores with a well-stocked children's department.
There are 2 types of body wash emulsions due to the composition

ContraindicationsHypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.

My rating
In my opinion the best emulsion. Attractive, extremely efficient, fragrant and pleasant fragrance. In fact, it leaves no residue on the walls of the tub. Moisturizes already during bathing. The skin has a delicate coating after oiling, even after a "normal" towel wipe. Can be used prophylactically, e.g. in the winter, when the skin is more exposed to dryness.

Oceanic Oillan Forte, a protective body wash emulsion

Composition:Aqua, Paraffinum Liquidum, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Glycerin, Acrylates Copolymer, Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil, Panthenol, Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract, Trideceth-6, Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate, Arginine, Borago Officantoin Sodium Oil Acrylate Copolymer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Butylene Glycol, MEthylisothiazolinone, Phenoxyethanol, Polyester-7.
Capacities and prices:250ml / 25.69 PLN, 500ml / 41.79 PLN
Dosage:Apply to damp skin, rinse with lukewarm water, and then gently (without rubbing) dry the skin with a towel.
Properties, indicationsBody wash emulsion gently cleanses and cares for dry and irritated skin without affecting its natural protective barrier. Borage oil and jojoba oil (1%), providing the skin with essential fatty acids, eliminate the feeling of tension as well as dryness, itching and flaking of the skin. D-panthenol and licorice extract soothe irritation and redness. Liquid paraffin (5%) creates a delicate protective layer on the skin's surface, protecting it from excessive water loss.
The product is recommended in supporting the therapy of dermatological diseases, including atopic dermatitis, acne, psoriasis or so-called fish scale.
ContraindicationsHypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.

My Rating:
Oillan Forte emulsion also belongs to the group of dermatological drugs. Perfect for soap intolerance. Skin-neutral pH encourages use in justified cases. Smell and oiling properties are similar to all previously mentioned emulsions. As with Emolium P, I do not recommend for prophylactic use.

To sum up: it can be written that only Oilatum is suitable for daily use as a bath emulsion for a child and baby without skin problems. The action of other cosmetics is similar to the group of drugs or they are actually.

All these emulsions slightly differ in terms of smell, performance or actual lubrication of the skin. The general difference beyond the indications is the price.

Personally, I mostly used Oilatum in the parallel import version, replacing it with Oillan emulsion in the winter. My daughter does not have and did not have skin problems, thanks to which such prophylaxis provided her with pleasant, oily skin, and I was calm about the child's health.

If there is no need, you can use ordinary bath gels or soaps from the very first days. However, due to the strong foam, I do not recommend using for a child who is not sitting yet and does not actually enjoy the pleasure of splashing in the bathtub.

Dear parents, attention. We have a competition for you. Write as you recall the first bath. We will award the most interesting answers with Emolium bath emulsion. We have four packages to give away. We look forward to your comments. Detailed regulations are available here.
